Kym Raines is a speaker and blogger about body image and eating disorders from the perspective of a sibling. She shares her powerful experience watching her sister die of a 15 year battle with bulimia, anorexia, and compulsive overeating, and honestly reflects on her own personal growth, grief, forgiveness, and the many lessons learned along the way.
“I’d like to say I always handled Kacy’s eating disorder with grace, compassion, and love but sometimes I was simply defeated and angry. Without outside support and therapy, our family dysfunction became a powerful force isolating us from one another and allowing the eating disorder to take over. I can’t stress enough that families do their research and find support. You count, too.”
Kym holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of San Diego. Since Kacy’s death in 2002, Kym has shared her story to incoming students at university freshmen orientations, college programs, high school classes and social issues conferences. She worked with teenage girls in group homes where food addiction was prevalent. As Program Manager at USD, Kym worked with students living in university housing who suffered from eating disorders, as well as concerned roommates and friends. In addition, she was a member of USD’s Health and Wellness Initiatives, Body Awareness Committees and co-leader for Body Acceptance Week.
